This July, we present Chimera, an exhibition of new, large-scale oil paintings by American contemporary artist Joshua Hagler and Rex Southwick’s first solo exhibition, Querencia.
In his latest body of work Hagler addresses a range of contemporary societal issues, drawing in part from his experience growing up in Middle America throughout the Eighties and Nineties. Contrastingly Southwick’s highly saturated paintings present lavish domestic spaces in relation to notions of ownership and aspiration.
The Private View, which took place on Thursday 18 July, was a celebration of two extremely talented artists. Although their subject matters conflict, their passion and expertise of the medium simultaneously complement each other. Showcasing the different aesthetics one can achieve with paint and demonstrating their individual approach towards the craft itself.
The event was attended by over 700 people, who filled the gallery with exciting conversation whilst admiring both Hagler’s and Southwick’s latest work and enjoying delicious Rice Based Vodka cocktails provided by Haku.
