Unit London is thrilled to announce Jason Boyd Kinsella’s first solo exhibition in France with Perrotin, available to view until 21 May 2022. Titled The Impermanent State of Being, this exhibition showcases a new series of paintings, highlighting the artist’s continued exploration of the nuanced human state.
Concerned with the constituent parts of the human condition and influenced by sculpture, design and architecture, Kinsella explores how geometric shapes interact with the surrounding space and provide a multitude of perspectives from which to observe the subject. The artist begins his process by creating preliminary studies and sketches, which he then enhances with a vibrant colour palette, first with a 3D software and subsequently in oil, applied to canvas. Using precise brushstrokes Kinsella allows for tiny imperfections in the pictorial layer, highlighting the human touch and skillful craftsmanship behind his work. By combining the inner workings of the human mind and an elaborate process of digitally manipulating shapes, the viewer is left to appreciate large-scale, beautiful portraits that are both conceptually enticing and technically accomplished.
Kinsella was born in Toronto, Canada in 1969. He completed a BFA at Bishop’s University in Quebec and now splits his time between Oslo and Los Angeles. His first solo exhibition with Unit London, titled Fragments, took place in 2021. In this exhibition Kinsella expanded on his body of painting while experimenting with elements of augmented reality and 3D printing. The artist intuitively explored each of his subjects from the inside out, creating uniquely accurate portraits of friends, acquaintances and strangers in his own distinctive visual language.
