Unit London is thrilled to announce Jeremy Olson’s debut solo presentation in Asia, taking place in Tapei at the Asia Art Center. Titled Zoognosis, this body of work is a natural evolution of Olson’s previous work, and is available to view from the 5th of August until the 17th of September.
Overview
The title Zoognosis, arises from a deft combination of the Greek noun Gnosis (for knowledge) and Zoonosis (concerning the transmission of disease between human and animal). Jeremy Olson is asking us to consider whether ideas, not just disease, can be transmitted between the two. These creatures ask us to engage with the things they may have to teach – Olson begs the question, will we listen? Zoognosis seeks to explore themes that have long preoccupied Olson’s mind. In addition to the mounting anxiety around climate change, Olson also explores the manipulation of desire in advertising and the estrangement and alienation within the information age. In a post-pandemic era whereby lockdowns segregated people physically and misinformation separated people mentally, Olson uses his personified ‘monsters’ to navigate the gradual loss of a shared reality.
Olson’s creations hover between human and animal, inviting us into the liminal space in which they exist. Olson’s delicate approach to brushwork and soothing colour palettes alludes to the nurturing nature of the monsters that roam freely around this imagined universe. In developing this liminal space that we are so warmly invited into, Olson has begun exploring the objects that may inhabit it. By creating imagined biomorphic kitchen implements or mutant designer accessories, we are invited to examine the advertisements and product placements that fabricate so much desire in daily life.
