Biography
Phillip Colbert is Scottish-born, London-based artist with a global following for his cartoon lobster persona & masterful hyper-pop history paintings. His work powerfully explores the patterns of contemporary digital culture & its relationship to a deeper art historical dialogue.
Described as “the Godson of Andy Warhol”, by Andre Leon Talley, Colbert continues the dialogue established by artists such as Richard Hamilton, James Rosenquist & Roy Lichtenstein. His multidisciplinary approach, with a focus on oil painting, updates the legacy of Pop art collage for the internet age, pushing the boundaries of artistic imagery. Colbert’s paintings cross high art themes from old master paintings & contemporary art theory with everyday symbols of mass contemporary culture, all narrated through the eyes of a cartoon Lobster alter ego.
Graduating with an MA in Philosophy from the University of St. Andrews, Colbert’s work has received international acclaim in museums & galleries. In August 2018 he participated in Unit London’s iconic Looking For U group show, and has since held exhibitions at The Power Long Museum in Shanghai, China and MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Chengdu, China, Galerie Nichido in Tokyo, Japan & the Kasama Nichido Museum of Art in Kasama, Japan.
