Suchitra Mattai x Plinth

To mark the opening of Suchitra Mattai's debut solo exhibition with Unit London, titled Monster, the artist recently spoke to Sammi Gale for Plinth about her artistic practice and inspirations.

"For me, despite its dogged focus on inequity, Monster presents an incorrigibly optimistic view of our time and place: from gateways to cages, from unknowns to knowns, these works are always shifting. Sharing this propensity for change ourselves, we gravitate towards them. In the end, despite even our monstrous differences, what binds everyone together is a frighteningly silly (or ridiculously frightening) fact – that all we can ever know for sure is how much remains unknown."  - Sammi Gale for Plinth

"Most of our ideas about monsters come from folktales, myths,’ Mattai says. Her ambition for these works is that they ‘allow us to realise that we’re really constructing these conceptions of the Other, and then ask us to get rid of this distortion." - Suchitra Mattai
Suchitra Mattai's Monster is available to view until the 12th February.
