Pressed Pause by Loren Bednar marks Unit’s second release with Art Blocks Engine, an interactive collection that speaks to our desire to pause and reflect in order to fully embrace our present.
Bednar invites viewers to become active participants, co-creators of the collection, not merely by minting and generating a unique artwork in real-time, which is the premise of Art Blocks, but by encouraging continued interaction with the piece following its creation. Through the simple command of ‘press and hold’, collectors are given control over the artwork’s state of being. By pressing and holding, one can choose between a static depiction and a slowly shifting one, connecting the underlying programme with our aspirations to influence the perpetual dynamics of existence.

Biography
Loren Bednar is a Michigan-based digital artist who has been producing generative art since 2006. Imbuing mathematical structure with the ambiguous qualities of colour, light and scale, he creates geometric abstractions filled with a sense of human uncertainty and emotional intensity. He gained notoriety for Traversals, a generative collection exploring luminous colours in layered intersections. Following this, phase was selected for an Art Blocks Curated release, further exemplifying his fascination with colourful patterns in constant motion. His dynamic interference patterns are an intentional nod to the spontaneity and beautiful unpredictability of collaborating with code. By ceding control to the forces of randomness and chance, Bednar transforms what may seem to be imperfections and errors within systems into fascinating new forms that echo the dynamism of our own lived experiences.
Bednar has garnered significant recognition within the digital art realm, with his works being collected internationally and shown in numerous exhibitions, including Unblock Gaudi: Digital Art via Blockchain at Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt; The Digital Roots at LUME Studios, New York; Refraction Festival at ZeroSpace, New York; Immutable at Vellum, Los Angeles; The Berlin Collection at Bright Moments, Berlin and Art Blocks x Samsung at Samsung 873, New York.
