MoMA’s Blockchain-Powered Postcards

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has launched a postcard project featuring 15 leading digital artists, including Casey Reas, IX Shells and Linda Dounia featured in our Web3 programme.

Starting with a bank digital canvas, each artist was asked to write a personal prompt – a string of meaningful or playful words – before minting it on the blockchain. Guided by their prompt, the artist designed and signed a stamp, added it to the digital canvas and passed it onto the next artist. As 15 virtual postcards circulated simultaneously across the globe, each artist had the opportunity to respond to the prompt of every other until an eclectic collection was amassed, diverse in aesthetic, yet united through the poetic language of the prompts.

As MoMA invites artists around the world to co-create expansive postcard collections, the poetic potential and network effects of blockchain technologies are brought to the fore. 

Covering 35 cities, 11 countries and 5 continents, the First 15 demonstrates the global nature of web3, where creative collaboration can thrive regardless of geographical distance and national borders. In the proceeding weeks, MoMA will open this initiative up to the broader public, encouraging artists around the world – regardless of technological know-how – to experiment with blockchain to connect, create and collaboratively innovate. 

MoMA Postcard aligns with Unit London’s commitment to creating spaces where dialogue and connections can flourish within the digital art realm.
