Bending Light

2022 Krista Kim

Bending Light is the apex of Kim’s oeuvre, encompassing all her previous work as it shifts and generates across the course of a five minute and thirty-six second immersive video. A generative artwork made in collaboration with Efrén Mur, it enforces normative behaviours that are extensions and reflections of ourselves. Kim draws this philosophy from Marshall McLuhan’s Medium is the Message, a book which was formative to her study of political science before her transition into the arts. As an experiential piece, Bending Light invites us to inhabit a collective space in which human and machine perfectly coincide. The work’s gradient shifts and transforms on a vertical plane, which Kim states is a representation of ‘new social paradigms and cultural shifts.’
