Blue Stratagem: Improvising on the Keyboard of Manifolds

Music and structure are both central to Sarin’s approach in Blue Stratagem: Improvising on the Keyboard of Manifolds. The piece mimics a music composition, the fugue – physically and metaphorically paralleling a sheet of music with notes, each input impacts the overall arrangement. She allows the structure to play out in a relatively open-ended way in the AI network but provides a framing device in the grid network that emerges from the blue and white forms. Sarin constructs this composition programmatically, as post-processing in Python that she writes herself. The grids visually emphasise basic structures and guidelines that she considers universal to all artists’ work, even when unseen.

Additionally, the title Blue Stratagem: Improvising on the Keyboard of Manifolds plays an important role beyond its apparent meaning. The artist rarely explains her abstract works to the viewer or provides a narrative, but she uses titles as a window into her artistic inspiration.
